Left Hand of God ARC Giveaway

Paul Hoffman has written the first in what will be a series set in an unspecified future time when a religious order has created “sanctuaries” where new generations are raised and molded.

A young boy bred to be a killer by religious fanatics seems to be the key in a monstrous plan that is set into motion when he escapes from the prison-like sanctuary of the fanatics—only to fall in love with a nobleman’s daughter.

As a child, I read Nancy Drew because I had an aunt who gave the books to me and my sister on every gift occasion. At the time, I liked the neat and tidy world Nancy lived in. Now, however, I must admit, that I prefer the magical world of Harry Potter, and I haven’t found any series yet that comes close to it. Perhaps Paul Hoffman has written it? In the meantime, a friend has recommended The Ringing Cedars series, based on a “true story”…hmmm, we’ll see…

I have read many series over the years – from Asimov’s “Foundation Trilogy” and Heinlein’s “Future History” to Kurtz’s Deryni series. But by far the series I have enjoyed most, and have re-read more times than any other is “Lord of the Rings”, including “The Hobbit”. I really lose myself in the world of Middle Earth – fighting the good fight with Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Gandalf and the others as they battle the forces of evil.

My favorite SF/Fantasy series is Zenna Henderson’s Chronicles of THE PEOPLE.

“The People” are humanoid beings from a faraway planet who are forced to emigrate to (among other places) Earth when their home world is destroyed in a natural disaster. Scattered mostly throughout the American Southwest during their landing before 1900, they are set apart by their desire to preserve their home culture, including their religious and spiritual beliefs. Their unusual abilities (“Gifts”) include telepathy, telekinesis, prophecy and healing, mostly manipulated through the “Signs and Persuasions”. The stories describe groups of The People, as well as lonely isolated individuals, most often as they attempt to find communities and remain distinct in a world that does not understand them. This aspect of individuality was a common theme in most of Henderson’s writing.

Beginning with Ararat (1952), Henderson’s People stories appeared in magazines and anthologies, as well as the novelized Pilgrimage: The Book of the People (1961) and The People: No Different Flesh (1966). Other volumes include The People Collection (1991) and Ingathering: The Complete People Stories (1995).

She was nominated for a Hugo Award in 1959 for her novelette Captivity, and remains a favorite author of many science fiction fans worldwide, despite the fact that her books were long out of print until the 1995 release of Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson, published by the New England Science Fiction Association Press.

“Ingathering” (the complete People Chronicles) is definitely a keeper.

My favorite series is Dune. Frank Herbert’s science fiction vision, combining elements of space opera, religion, and philosophy in a strange, unforgiving setting, is second to none. The characters are rich and thoroughly developed. Each book in the series increased in scope and different aspects of storytelling.

Some of my favorite series are The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, The Valdemar series by MErcedes Lackey, Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop, and of course Laurell K Hamilton. Each has a world that the writers make believable, has characters that keep you turning the pages, and has me buying the next in the series regardless of book reviews.
